Decorating the Outside!!!

Today seemed like a good day to finish decorating so I put on my winter coat and braved the cold winds!

We have Juniper, Spruce, Colorado Blue Spruce, Norway Pine, White Pine, Jack Pine, and Arborvitae in our yard.  So I began my pruning adventure and lopped off lower branches where I could and thinned the others like the Spruce where I could just take a piece of a layer.  I just gather what I like and start arranging in my window boxes and my wheelbarrows.  I still had a small stash of winterberries from our Christmas sale - I love the little touch of red!

Our little Christmas doggie in the window!
Love the old bird houses...sometimes a bird will come
and visit but won't move in!
Even gargoyles get some decorations!
and our Christmas goose nests in one of my old wheelbarrows
I wonder how long before he gets covered in snow!

Now I feel better - I almost ran out of time to get this project done.  No snow in the forecast so my family will be able to see my little outside vignettes on Christmas Eve.

Merry Christmas to all!

A Few Vintage Quilts...

Today is the first day of real snow at our house.  We probably got 10 inches.  So Mr. J spent a lot of time snow blowing our driveway and of course, a path to the new barn.  I haven't quite wrapped things up in there yet - takes me a while to get back out there after our intense days surrounding our sales.  But it is supposed to warm up this week with Thanksgiving being about 52 degrees!  So that will be very nice for every one who is traveling to a great dinner some place.

A while ago I decided I would feature my vintage quilts on my blog.  So I took a picture of four of them.  I'm not sure that this is the best way to show them but for now I will show you how I display them in my home.

MY hubby makes these quilt ladders and supplies a local shop.  I love them because I can take them out of the quilt cupboard and display them a little better.  It's always good to unfold and refold quilts differently so they don't develop permanent lines that will weaken them.

I bought all of these quilts on ebay sometime in the early 2000's.  They are all forties quilts except for the red and white one that is a variation of a Red Cross quilt that was given to soldiers returning from WWI by the Red Cross c. 1920.  I'm not sure of the names of the patterns but the red and white is a diamond in a square.  I had this quilt appraised and the appraiser called it an economy patch variation - I like diamond in a square better.

The top quilt is a four pointed star and the fabrics are so interesting - some large prints and others are smaller - visually very interesting.

The third one down on the ladder is some kind of Dresden Plate I think - I can't find it anywhere in my quilt books.  Again the fabric is wonderful and the old green and lavender colors in the appliqued circles are bright and light up a dark room.  I've heard that is why those colors were used.  The lighting wasn't very good in the olden days and those quilts really brightened a room.

The aqua and white is a nine patch and snowball combination.  This was a top that I bought and had quilted.  The fabric is very crisp and has a bit of a shine like a polished cotton.  My favorite green color - it was called a mint but is a little duller than mint I think.

I will add more quilts to this blog as I research them a little more.  I have to figure out how to hang them up so the whole quilt can be appreciated.

I do love my quilt collection.

New Blog

Because I can't view my current and past blogs, I've created a new blog called, Meandering...My Journey at http://www.bbonnieblue2.blogspot.com/

So I hope you join me over there - I'd hate to lose you!!!

We'll see if this works, no other fixes have worked!

Thanks and I hope to see you soon!

Bonnie

P.S.  Brother - all of a sudden my posts are visible to me again.  After I created another blog...go figure.  Well - I guess I will try and keep posting on both for now and see what happens next!!!

Irony...

Somewhere is hiding my last post...can't view it - can't feature it on Facebook.  Hmmm...so I'm trying again on a different subject.  Never mind - I think I tricked Blogger and it finally published and I couldn't Preview but caught the address and was able to get it on Facebook!!!  You have to be conniving I guess.  We'll see how this one goes or if it goes!!!

Anyway after I got home from my 5 day quilt retreat last Monday - Yay!  5 days!!! - Hubby announced - the bath tub is completely plugged up and the heat doesn't come on.

So workpeople were here last Monday cleaning, unplugging and tearing down the furnace.  Good news is - floors, etc. are clean and tub drains.  Bad news...furnace will be costly to repair so we opted to replace.  Darn!

When "they" talked about the opportunity to replace, "they" commented that it would only take a day.  Now "they" are telling us how busy "they" are and it might be sometime this week.  Urghh...

Running electric heaters = costly.  Not running electric heaters when its 40 - 50 degrees = chilly.

So all last week no heat at home but we had hot water that drained down the drain in the tub.  Yay!

We planned a weekend at the lake to go to Oktoberfest at Ruttger's.  The festival was great - so many vendors selling so many crafts.  No really many funky Christmas things though, which is what I was looking for.  But at the cabin, we had heat!!!  Yay!  But no hot water...darn!..until Saturday night and we went home Sunday morning.

Irony.  Off to cuddle with Hubby and Honey for warmth.

Take care,
Bonnie

Hello! I'm back!!!

Oh well - its been a few weeks since I've posted something - anything!  I guess I've been on sabbatical.

I did participate in a five - yes, 5 day quilt retreat!  It was so much fun.  Usually we go for four days but we extended our October retreat.  Yay!

My little great granddaughter is one year old today!  So while at quilt camp I made her a couple of things.  I made her pillow case and bag that match the quilt I made her when she was born...remember the Crawling Baby quilt with the matching diaper bag.  I made her a little fabric ball too with kitties peeking out for her to see.  And you never have enough catchall's for sewing stuff so this little item wraps a coffee cup and is so handy!

Tote with matching pillow!

Raggy ball and sewing catchall!
This Halloween wallhanging has been in the works for a couple of years now...so I completed it - finally!!!  Now to find a place to hang it up for the next week.  It was so much fun to make but I never got it quilted and bound until this weekend.  Walla - fini!

Crazy Halloween wallhanging made with a charm pack!
There were a couple of other things I completed and a couple of things I almost completed.  Always a stack of UFO's - I find that comforting...never bored, always something waiting for me.

Now to get ready for our Holiday Sale Nov. 11 and 12!

Take care,
Bonnie

It's Fall! Yay!

The road to my house is very picturesque.  People comment that the trees are so pretty - gorgeous they say.  I agree!  I love looking out the window this time of the year.  Usually its green and lush but now its goldens, reds, rusts, and oranges.

This is actually going out my driveway - I waited too long
to get a good shot of the drive to my house.
This is what I see when I'm at my computer.  I love the
subtle colors of yellow and rust.
I actually love my yard no matter what color it is!
It seems funny to me that I love those colors outside but I don't decorate with fall colors at all.  I live with aqua, red, green of all shades, and just a little blue.

So now its time to dress up the barn for our next sale...lots of fall colors mixed in with our gorgeous wood tones of all of our dressers and cabinets and tables! I'm pretty sure have every color possible but today the warm fall colors stand out.

Love this banner that Jaci made for Halloween!

Kathy works wonders with our tablescapes!
Jaci made the yardstick table - so clever!

All set up for the sale in the barn!  Lots of stuff outside and inside!
It's still 70+ degrees in October in MN.  What a great fall - we are very dry but its just unbelievably lovely outside.  Wish I was at the lake!

Remember Farmgirls Country Sale Oct. 7 and 8!  Then just one more in November - big time Christmas sale.  Can't wait to decorate for that one!

Take care,

The Great Big Stitched Postcard Swap

Today I received pictures of The Great Big Stitched Postcard that I sent to Julia in the UK.  I was late in sending my card so I neglected to take pictures.  So I asked her if she would take a picture of it and she did!

So here is my creation:

The batik flower is a pin so she can remove it and wear it if she wants to!  I love doing these swaps.

Hope you are having a great day!  Its a beautiful, warm fall day in MN!

Take care,
Bonnie

The Birds...

Fall is only a day or so old but the birds have been gathering for the better part of a month now.  It's the first sign for me that summer is coming to an end and my favorite time of the year is beginning.  Hopefully, fall will last a long time - well, we know that won't happen but I can dream, can't I???

My friend came to visit the other day...her favorite color is orange so I think fall is her favorite time also.  Right before she got here, I heard this tremendous noise - squawking to be more accurate.  I looked out the window and the tree was alive with blackbirds and they were making their voices heard!

Look at all the noisy birds!!!
Alfred Hitchcock, The Birds (1963), forever impacted my life and influenced my fear of millions of squawking birds...I fear they will attack me and so I stayed in the house until they flew away in silence.  I will forever remember the look on Tippi Hedrin's face when the birds attacked her.  (big shiver...)

Otherwise, I love fall - the flutter of the falling leaves, pumpkins, farmer's markets and the crunch of acorns.  Time to go for a drive and see the beautiful colors of the trees...

Take care,
Bonnie

Wrapped Coaster Tutorial

I love making stuff out of unusual things like clothesline!  So today I thought I would show you how to make a set of coasters using clothesline and fabric.  I  have been making bowls, purses, hot pads and coasters using It's a Wrap by Susan Breierfor a few years now.  She has written a second book, It's A Wrap II.  I find it so relaxing to make these items - I think you will too once you make a couple of coasters.

Supplies for 4 coasters approx. 3 3/4" - 4" dia.:
1/4 yd. fabric (I used Batik fabric)
approx. 16 ft. of cotton clothesline
pins
thread
sewing machine with a zigzag

1.  Cut about eight 7/8" strips across the width of the fabric - selvage to selvage.
2.  Cut four lengths of clothesline 48" long.  You can vary this length depending on how large you want your coasters.  Double the recipe and make hot pads!

To begin this project, pull out the middle fibers of the cord and cut off about 1".
Pull the outer fibers back over the inner core.  This helps taper the end of your cord.
Begin to wrap the clothesline with a fabric strip, overlapping fabric as you wrap, holding the strip 1/4" above and behind cord at the angle in picture.  Begin wrapping so you can fold the extra fabric over the top edge of the cord - see picture.  I pin the end and continue to wrap the cord with fabric until about 1 1/2" of fabric is left.
This is my setting for the zigzag stitch - Susan suggests a 1/4" zigzag.
Begin coiling wrapped clothesline and secure with a pin.  Make sure its as tight a coil as you can make.  I wrap the entire fabric strip down around the cord using tension to keep it tight and secure with a pin once in a while.  This will take some practice but it will be obvious if the fabric isn't wrapped tight enough.  Some people use glue to secure it in places but it isn't necessary - just work with tension on the fabric as you wrap, securing it with a few pins.
Place the coil under a see-through presser foot if you have one and zigzag across it to secure the middle.  Note that the cord is always to right of the foot.
Begin zigzagging between cord edges, securing one side of cord
to the other as you keep turning the coil.
I line up the middle red line of the foot between the cords as per picture.
When you need to add a strip, lay it behind the attached strip.  I pin it together on a diagonal and continue to wrap the rest of the cord.  Secure fabric at the point of adding a new strip and then once every 6" or so with a pin.
Continue zigzagging until there is about 2" of cord left...trim the inside cord fibers as you did in the beginning, then continue to wrap 1/2" or so over the end of the cord and trim off the rest of the fabric.
I use a pin to hold the tapered end to the coil as I sew and then zigzag around the outside edge of the coaster to finish the edge.  Make sure you catch the very edge of the tapered end but if there is a little fabric not caught in the stitches, just carefully trim off the extra.

This is a good beginning project - I like making smaller projects when I'm learning a new technique.  It's a good way to find out if you want to make more!  I like using batiks...the thread count is higher and the fabric frays less.  The last step is to trim threads if you want to, otherwise leave them for a rustic look.

I think you would enjoy this craft and It's A Wrap by Susan Breier has other great examples to inspire you!

Take care - let me know if you have questions!

Old Friendships...

Today I spent three hours with old friends.  You know those friends that you laugh so easy with, that you reminisce about old times with and that you never want to leave.  Twenty five years melted away and we were young again, reliving those happy, overwhelming, and loving days.

Together we raised our kids, sang around campfires (one even melted a tennis shoe that got a little too close to the campfire), went to family camp, taught Sunday school together, wrote Vacation Bible School curriculum (from scratch), shared recipes, made crafts except for Carol (now she's scrapbooking!) and supported each others dreams.

Today family pictures were passed around and new ones were taken at the restaurant halfway between.  I miss them already...it was difficult to say goodbye.

Stay in touch and cherish your friends,

Bonnie

She Lived Each Day...

The only picture I have of Bev - this one shows her concentration to the minutest detail.  It's how I remember her walking around the barn matching the colors - creating her "visions" as she called her little vignettes.  (She'd probably hate this picture but I love it!)
Bev was a quiet person filled with dignity and creativity.  She worked with us at Farmgirls diligently, loving each minute she spent in the barn.  We had to remind  her to go home but she always stretched the time limit we gave her.   One day she said to me, "Okay, Mother!" in her soft manner and laughed.  She gave and got lots of hugs.  I last saw her a week ago today - she was in so much pain but still hoped to fly to the UK but only if she felt better.  It was not to be.

Bev lost her battle with cancer today.  The news hit us hard...she worked with us to set up the sale only a week and a half ago.  How can it be that she is gone so quickly?  Her hope was to fly to London to see her new grandbaby last Tuesday but pain sent her to the hospital.  And then life support and now she is on her way to a better place without pain and no more chemo.  Her body and soul fought until it could fight no more.

We already miss you, Bev.  You taught us many things about living and decorating and patience and determination and friendship.  Our thoughts and prayers are with you, your family and friends.

Take care,

Bonnie

Like I Really Need to Begin Another Project!!!

Some days it seems like I am in school again...only now I'm sitting in front of  my computer following crafty blogs and Pinterest getting ideas and learning the latest techniques.  It's just like magic...you only have to search and you will find!!!

I've been wanting - really wanting - an old dress form.  I made the mistake of ordering a new one from Joann's and when it came, it was red.  Now I might do a redo but right now I have another idea from a great site The Polka Dot Closet.

I ordered two forms and stands one Sat. and they arrived the next Friday!  Then I got out the Mod Podge and printed some sheet music that I had stamped with cool stamps on calligraphy paper.  Then I tore the paper up and coated the back of the paper first and then pieced it on my form.  I put a coat of Mod Podge all over the form and before it dried I applied a coat of Walnut Ink to age it.  The calligraphy paper helped give it an aged look and the ink finished it off wonderfully.  I am pleased with my first project of this size.

So easy and not that messy!
I'm going to change the lace on the bottom
but otherwise I think its so cool!
So now I have one for sale that I'm using to display jewelry and the other one I will do for myself.  I'm thinking of using sewing patterns that I stamp with fun stamps.  Maybe I will do prairie points along the bottom - showing off my quilting skills.  Well - they aren't very difficult but will look cool if I use the right fabrics.

That's all for today, folks!  Doing a little gardening, went to a few sales and decided which treasures to paint or Mod Podge or chalk paint or....

Never a dull moment but we are still tired and recovering from our fantastic sale this past weekend.

Take care,

Bonnie

A Winning Week!!!

What a great couple of days we spent out in the barn...not only was the sale a huge and I mean, huge success but the day was filled with laughter and friends and just good fun.  Both days the weather was gorgeous - not too hot or too humid.  A few rain drops today but the rain didn't even cover the sidewalk in front of the barn.

And now I have my favorite uniform on - a light quilted vest and a light flannel shirt.  I love the coolness of the air tonight - it will be good sleeping tonight after a couple of weeks of long days of moving furniture around and walking many miles back and forth between our pole barn, house and new barn getting things ready for the sale.

I have to say that we have the nicest, funniest customers.  Some come from as close as across the road and some travel miles to see us.  Two new friends stopped in on their way from Superior, WI to shop in St. Cloud, MN.  We just happened to be between the two cities.  Yay!  What fun ladies - we hope to see them again soon!  Superior is approximately 90 miles from here!

We must celebrate one of the accomplishments of one of our Farmgirls.  Farmgirl Barb won the Gedney Pickle Sweepstakes prize at the MN State Fair this week and we sold many jars of her Bread and Butter pickles in the last two days!  Congrats to her!!

My private pickle stash!
So all in all - we are celebrating our successes and resting up for a few days.  And then we begin again - the hunt is on for more items to get ready for the October sale.  Hey - I thought we were retired!

Take care,

Bonnie

A September Sale!!!

Nothing starts off a new month like an occasional sale in the country!!!  We beat the heat this time...the crew got everything arranged and beautiful yesterday missing the heat and humidity today.  YaY!

I took a couple of pictures to show you - its so fun to decorate in the fall!  The colors are so warm and fun.

An oak corner cupboard with great fall wreath
 made on a picture frame!
The fall harvest table including homemade pickles!!!
A great find - a waterfall bedroom suite - so sweet!
Well - I still have a few things to finish before I can go to bed.  The sale begins at 8 a.m. tomorrow morning - supposed to rain until noon.  How ever could we have a Farmgirls Country Sale without rain????

Take care,
Bonnie

Not All Fun and Games...

Just in case you think all this Farmgirls Country Sale stuff is all fun and frolicking...

Major surgery...
Clamps and more clamps!
The dresser was a pretty good deal but of the three drawers - one needed to be remade and the other glued.  So hubby had his work cut out for him.  He spends many hours fixing things the right way and has so much patience...I have none so we work pretty good together.  I make the lists of things that need to be done and he works on the list.

This style dresser was probably made in the 1930's - looks like one that Sears carried in an advertisement I saw online.  It was probably part of a bedroom suite made after the depression for newly married couples just starting out in life.

Couldn't get a good view of the mirror - so unique!
I love all the detail and the mirror is so lovely.  It's always a good feeling when its out of surgery and home in the Farmgirls barn!  He got it done in plenty of time for the sale Sept. 2 and 3.  Whew!

Take care,
Bonnie

Big Honking Drawer Table

Who would think that you could make a table out of a drawer?  Well - we found one and now when we find another big honking drawer, we will make another table.

So the table is basically a large drawer from a good sized (hence the "honking" adjective) dresser or cabinet.  The legs are other pieces of repurposed wood and the hinged top is another part of the dresser/cabinet.

I really love this look!!!  With the hinged top, its very versatile and easy to store some of my bizillion magazines.  I can see this painted a cool color and used in the kids' bedroom for dolls or transformers or color books and crayons/markers.  I'm off to find some orphan drawers but this one is for sale at our next Farmgirls Country Sale on Sept. 2 & 3.

Take care,
Bonnie

The Great Big Stitched Postcard Swap

The Great Big Stitched Postcard Swap is complete for me!  It's my second one and this week I received my postcard from Nicola from London, UK!

Isn't it gorgeous!!!  At first I thought it was cut from a silk piece of fabric but Nicola silk screened it!  I just love the colors and the enormous amount of work she went through to make this postcard for me.

I was late in mailing mine to Julia in Liverpool, UK - time seems to get away from me.  In my haste to mail it, I forgot to take a picture of it so I'm relying on Julia to post something and then I'll share it with you.  The directions are very clear but it was dark when I finished it last night and then I can't take a picture and yada yada yada...

Thank you again, Nicola!

An Afternoon with My Dad

I do have a couple of crafty blogs almost ready to finish up but today I had a great day and wanted to share it with you.

It started off with a haircut - when you have short hair like I do, its important to get it shaped (in my case - actually needs lots of thinning and cutting) every 4 weeks.  So that was good.

Then it was errands and a little shopping before I went to Curves after which 14 Curves friends celebrated our August birthdays.  So much fun - very good food - and lots of laughter!

I had to leave before everyone else did because I was going to see my Dad!  My hubby fixed his park bench and I went to paint/stain it for him.  When I got there he had begun the project.  Dad is 87 and still pretty sharp but his painting skills have definitely gone down hill and I'm not an expert.  First of all he was staining in the sun so things got sticky/tacky and uneven.

So together we finished staining the bench.  It was fun for both of us.  So I stayed and he talked and I listened and it was great.  I sure love my Dad!

"One Person of Integrity..."

Yesterday I received my BOMC2, (Book of the Month 2 - free shipping and most books are $9.95) selection, Daniel Silva's, Portrait of a Spy.  He's a great writer and the stories are complicated so I have to use most of my brain to keep things straight...part of my exercise program.

This title is part of his series about Gabriel Allon who is an art restorer, assassin and spy, which explains why his stories are so interesting.  This is his 14th book if I've counted right - his last was The Rembrandt Affair (excellent.)

I write this tonight because I wanted to share one of the quotes in the front of this book,  "One person of integrity can make a difference, a difference of life and death" - Elie Wiesel.  Mr. Wiesel is such a wise and brave man.

Elie Wiesel (1928 -)
Elie (Eliezer) Wiesel is a novelist, journalist and 1986 Nobel Prize winner. He was born an Orthodox Jew in Rumania and survived the concentration camps.  What a life of integrity he has lived...and survived.  I want to read his biography next...in fact I think I have it here somewhere - stacks of books everywhere!

I thought in this day and age of The Big Lie - say something totally false and repeat it and repeat it until some people think its the truth - we could all be inspired by this great hero.

Take care, think about your hero, read a book and keep exercising!

I'm feeling uneven...

I'm having an issue with uneven energy.  It seems that either I'm running 90 miles an hour or I'm comatose.  It's beginning to worry me because I'd rather be comatose.

Just wondering if I'm alone or if you feel that way too.  Would you eat more protein or more chocolate?

Tomorrow I begin a three day quilt retreat...just might be the event to put me on an even keel.  Bringing more chocolate than protein...I'll let you know what works.

Restocking is so Fun!

On the road again...
People often ask me where we get all the stuff for our sales.  "Everywhere!", I say!  And that's the truth.

This week I've been 85 miles south of my house on Tuesday to pick up a few things I won in an online auction - two shelves and a vintage folding sewing table.  Always fun to see what I really won vs what it looks like in the online picture.  Yay - not too bad but lots of gas.

Ok - so I've got some painting to do!
However, it's MN Shop Hop time so I stopped at three quilt shops on my way and picked up a few pieces of fabric and some new quilting magazines.  And then I had to visit an antique shop across the street from the auction...picked up a nice little yellow magazine stand - for my new magazines and a cute little stool.
Might have to be aqua for my sewing room!
Oh, yes and then there was a garage sale that was open a day early so I got some really cool items there - large glass and copper vase-type containers that were filled with plastic fruit - ugh! - that will look really cool with pine cones or some silver glass ornaments or fresh evergreen branches.

On Wednesday, just down the road was a moving sale with lots of lampshades - remember the 12 to 1 ratio on whether the shade will look good on the lamp??? - got lots of stock now.  I love the 1930 -1940 style dressers and bought one that needs some lovin' and fixin' - gorgeous three paned mirror.  Can't wait until Bob fixes that one.  Mirrors are a very popular item - scored a beautiful ornate gold one and lots more great finds.

Hubby's truck was in the way so this is as good as it gets right now!
Today I headed to a town 45 minutes south of here to a Sisters Sale that I try to get to every year.  Our checkout counter came from there a couple of years ago for $5!  I love the tables made with the old iron sewing machine legs - got one!  Another old white, ornate chair and lots of cherry canisters (might live in my kitchen for a while) and a great real wood little cabinet with four drawers that needs to be a fun color.

Needs some cherry fabric on the seat I think!
On the way home I spotted another interesting garage sale where I picked up a nice wicker coffee table, window mirror and two tablecloths along with other treasures.

So after I got home I had just enough energy to weed my weed garden (4' x 8') and sprayed for weeds.  I never use weed spray so hope it does the trick.  I did pick a hand full of sugar snap peas - so good in our salads tonight.  Not much for veggies this year - tomatoes are usually very plentiful but I've picked two good sized ones and the other 6 have been really small.  They still taste so good though.

Tomorrow is another trip up north to the Deerwood Summerfest see what we can find for the sale!  Meeting a good friend for the sale and lunch afterwards.  Oh ya - and then a visit to Wooden Nichols at Garrison on our way home.  Crystalie has such great stuff and fun ideas at her little cabin store in the woods!

Take care,

Bonnie
